Who we are

Sarnia House was established in 2019 by the father-daughter partnership of Colin and May de la Rue.

Colin de la Rue

For Colin, Sarnia House is a new interest after forty years’ practice in international maritime law, over twenty-five of them as author of legal texts.

The third edition of Shipping and the Environment, the main practitioners’ reference book in the field, is in preparation with co-authors in the US and Scandinavia, and is due for publication by Informa in 2021.

Needless to say, a legal tome of over 1,200 pages, with a 60-page index and over 6,500 footnotes, is very different from most other non-fiction. But such a publication demands very exacting standards, and being part of the team responsible for it is a rigorous training in a range of writing and publishing disciplines.

For Colin, writing and publishing are not separate endeavours but integral parts of a single process. Putting past experience to new use has been an exciting challenge, coming to fruition in April 2020 with Sarnia’s first publication, Fifty Miles with my Dad.

May de la Rue

May is a medical student at Bristol University and a recorded composer. In Fifty Miles with my Dad she tells the story of a fundraising trek which led through young philanthropy to her career in medicine.

May enjoys both the production and marketing sides of the publishing process, being closely involved in design and editing, online publicity and planning of promotional events. She is looking forward to recording her own narration of Fifty Miles for audio publication in the autumn of 2020.
